One Way Street

about

Life gets in the way sometimes.

It's a phrase I've been using a lot to explain away or reconcile with the way I've been feeling recently. Sometimes the most terrifying things demand your attention and take you past a limit you thought you had. Sometimes you write songs that felt like a hyperbolized dramatization of real events at the time that end up becoming heartbreakingly accurate as time goes on. There's a certain resignation in it that could easily come across as apathetic. A surface level excuse for not getting something done on time, or to rationalize why you've been shutting off from the people who care about you. But even if it's self-serving, I can't help but think of it as a term of acceptance. A relinquishing of control over things that couldn't have been avoided regardless. You learn to recognize the moments that will shape you as a person by your response to them. You learn to embrace the disruption, understanding that these are the moments that, in contrast, make the rest of our lives so beautiful. You learn to let life get in the way sometimes.

lyrics

Hesitation
As the walls begin to melt
And I can't see you anymore

I've been waiting
Way too long to make this right
I should've seen it all before

I wanna take some time
To make sure you're not scared
Of anything that I was
Saying when I told you
There was something going
Wrong inside your head

You want an explanation
In the shape of tiny
Papers that you
Shove behind your tongue
To free your mind and then leave you numb

I thought that you could show me
I thought that you could make it all make sense
Cuz that's not what you told me
Now I don't wanna know what happens next

I've been way too far away
Ignoring everything you say
I wish I knew how to make it okay
But I'll stay until it's

Over now
I know what I've done wrong
Yeah I know what I've done wrong
And I hope you can say the same

You're going down a one way street
And I don't know if you can turn it around now
You're going down a one way street
And I don't know if I can pull you out

You're going down a one way street
And I don't know if you can turn it around now
You're going down a one way street
And I don't know if I can pull you out

I thought that you could show me
I thought that you could make it all make sense
Cuz that's not what you told me
Now I don't want to know

No I don't wanna know what happens next

Cuz when you think like that it fucks with your head
But you're too far gone to hear what I said
So I'll just keep praying you don't wind up dead
Before the next time I can see you again
